Holy Action

April/The Martyr Life

28 April 2010

For he who does not fear God will not love Him. He who does not love Him will not fulfill His commandments. He who does not fulfill His commandments will not possess eternal life in heaven. For in fear, love is found. In love, holy action is found. In holy action is found eternal life in heaven.

  - Colman mac Beognai, Aipgitir Chrabaid (Irish, 7th century)

Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

  - 2 Corinthians 7.1

To the right of the exalted Jesus on the Cross of Muiredach (His left), those who have come to Him in faith and humility, go from Him in obedient service, as martyrs (witnesses) for the King and His Kingdom. That witness begins in the kind of people we are - people who love God and fear Him, out of which comes an earnest desire to please and honor Him.

"Holy action" is what Jesus saves us unto, Ephesians 2.10. We have been redeemed unto good works, the works God ordained long ago for us to walk in, the works Jesus did - and more besides - of keeping the Law of God (Matt. 5.17-19; 1 Jn. 2.1-6). We do not keep the Law to earn salvation; we keep the Law as the way of working out our salvation so that the righteousness of Christ becomes visible in and through us (Phil. 2.12, 13).

Indifference to or neglect of the Law of God does not please our King. Indeed, they who thus regard His Law will find that even their prayers are an abomination to the Savior (Prov. 28.9). If we claim to love God we should also fear Him (Deut. 12.12, 13), and out of that fear will come the desire to please Him in holy actions that show the watching world the reality of the resurrection life of Christ.

We will not strive to bring holiness to completion if we do not fear the Lord. We cannot bring holiness to completion if we will not meditate in God's Law regularly and increasingly (Ps. 1). And if we do not care about bringing holiness to completion - about showing the reality of the risen Christ to the watching world in holy actions - then this will show that we do not truly know the Lord at all.

Hard talk, this, but strictly Biblical. Are you zealous for holy action in the fear of God? Or are you still reprobate (2 Cor. 13.5)?
