Witnesses to Truth

April/The Martyr Life

27 April 2010

If anyone desires to know the truth, he should correctly know what hides it, what reveals it. Truth hides itself from everyone who despises it; it reveals itself to everyone who fulfills it.

  - Colman mac Beognai, Aipgitir Chrabaid (Irish, 7th century)

"If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

  - John 8.31, 32

In a court of law a witness is sworn to "tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." So it is with the Christian. But the martyr life to which every believer is called is not just one of words. When truth takes over a person's life, so that he begins to fulfill it, everything about him witnesses to the reality of the risen Christ.

How does one get to the place where, increasingly, his whole life embodies the truth that is in Jesus? By abiding in the Word of Christ, reading, meditating in, and studying the Scriptures, searching them day by day to meet the Lord Jesus in His glory and be transformed by His life-giving Spirit.

For the believer is not called merely to "go witnessing," but to "be" a witness to the Lord (Acts 1.8). Unless we first live the truth, no amount of our speaking it will convey the power of truth. Every day of our lives is a court of law, in which we are called upon, not merely to tell the truth, but to be the truth, living epistles from a loving God, showing by all our words and deeds the power of truth to make all things new.

You want to be a witness to truth; you know the Lord has called you to the martyr life, and you understand this and this alone is where you will find fulfillment, purpose, joy, and meaning in life. Is anything standing in your way? Any unconfessed sin? Any neglect of God's Word? Any fear of man? Shake it all off in the power of Christ's Spirit, and be renewed in Him, day by day.

For the martyr life - the lived witness for Christ - is the only life that is worthy of Him Who died, rose again, reigns at the Father's right hand, and is coming again one day to gather all His martyrs to Himself. Let Him find you serving when He comes.
